He's to early to crawl. Most babies don't until around 7 or 8 months. They learn to crawl once they learn to sit. They then lean forward until one day they're off. Most babies hate tummy time. It is recommended that they have 20 min a day. My baby is also 5 months, and I put her on her tummy several times a day for a few minutes. She's getting better at it, and is starting to like it a little more. Hope this helps

5 months is still an okay age. I wouldn't be worried about it too much at this point. On average, it's something like this:
24 weeks - he can put his weight on his forearms and push up, hold his hands out to be lifted and sit support on his own for a few minutes
28 weeks - he can now bear weigh on one hand in a prone position, sit without support take all his own weight on straight knees and hips when you hold him
36 weeks - he can take all his weight on his own legs but needs to hold on to do so. Can sit , lean forward and sideways and stay balanced. May roll over or try to crawl.
40 weeks - he should be mobile
Appreciate that for a baby, being on your tummy on the floor is boring! Lie down on the floor on your tummy and see how little you can see. Now imagine that you're not mobile, and just lifting your torso to move your head around takes a lot of work. You probably wouldn't want to be down there for too long either.
How can you encourage him? To encourage him to pull his tummy off the floor in preparation for crawling, play at airplanes: Lie side-by-side on your tummy and lift both your arms and torsos off the floor.
Many babies don't actually crawl, but choose to shuffle around on their bums instead. He'll probably start doing that around 32 weeks if he's going to.
If he does start to crawl, he'll most likely crawl backwards first. This is completely normal, and it won't be long before his muscle tone and control has him going forward.
Most importantly, just make tummy time as interesting as possible. Have lot of toys available, play mats with mirrors, and different fabrics are great, and get down there with him. Most importantly, don't stress about it. If he doesn't want to be there, don't make him.

Some babies completely bypass the crawling stage and go straight to walking. He might be happier on his tummy when he gets a bit older, a lot of babies dont like lying this way, dont worry if hes going to crawl he will do it when he is ready.

if his development is normal, dont worry and dont rush...he will do it in his own time... give him plenty of floor time with toys that he likes. You will be surprised that he will begin reaching and moving to get to what he likes. My son didnt crawl until he was 7 months old. As a matter of fact, he was beginning to stand holding on to furniture first. From about 6 months he would let me put him on his stomach as long has he had not just eaten, but he would scoot backwards. My dad finally got down on the floor and crawled, and it was as if a light went on in my son's head...

Do NOT let him walk before he crawls. Research has shown that crawling is extremely important to the proper development of a child. It affects learning to read and write. For more info look for articles or books on right and left brain development and brain integration.

I heard that babies sometimes skip the whole crawling thing and go straight to walking. Maybe get some toys that encourage him to enjoy his "tummy time".

Each baby is different. My dd is very strong for her age but did not crawl until 8.5 months because she hated to be on her tummy. Also I hold her almost constantly LOL.

It sounds like he isn't ready yet and still young to be crawling. You might lay him on his belly and put his favorite toy in front of him a bit, he'll see the toy and probably try to get to it and eventually crawl.

For boys it takes long to decide what he wants to do. my son would not crawl untill he was about six months and when he started walking he did it on his own. So dont worry he will get going soon just when he does i dont want to hear how can i keep him stll cause there is no good answer for that.
