I think it would depend on the child - their level of maturity and interests, as well as whether the camps that are day camps in your area are of good quality. Also, many kids go to camps for specific subjects where building a relationship with other campers is vital to the process. Then a sleep away is probably better (ex. Seeds of Peace, Model UN). If it is a place you want the kids to go so you can work during the day then a day camp might suffice.
A kid with out the skills to spend a week or more away will have a miserable time. A first sleep away camp should be of short duration to see how it would go.

It depends upon the age of the child. I wouldn't send a child under age 10-12 to sleep away camp. The age depends upon the maturity of the child. Some children are able to handle it at 10, and others need a couple more years of growing up to do before being able to handle being away for several nights with the parents.

Sleepaway!!!! There are way more activities, you can actually camp out and roast marshmallows instead of being in nothing but a rec center or an outing until three o clock. You get to make more friends. And still can get outings to a beach, a paintball place or something like that. Especially out in the country side, for example last time I went, my friends and I got to ride in the front seat of a police car at full speed with sirens on. Now tell me.... can you do all that and more in the city from 9am till 3pm?

When your child is ready, around 12 or 13, sleep away gives great experiences and builds independence. It depends on your child. Don't make him/her feel they're being sent off. Choose a camp carefully, visit it. It should have with diverse activities, be clean, with few kids per counselor, a nurse practitioner on staff, safe as to who comes in or out and what they bring in, and in beautiful outdoor setting.
