Hybrids are better on gas and pollute less, but they cost more to buy unless you keep the car a long time. Your most cost-effective solution considering both fuel efficiency and cost is a Honda Civic (non-hybrid).

I had a diesel car once and I HATED it! It was smelly and the car broke down regularly. It was not fuel efficient and it was hard to find a mechanic for it. So I would chose the hybrid car as most fuel efficient car! I would never ever ever choose a diesel car!

Here is a simple comparison between the VW Jetta TDI (diesel ) and the Toyota Prius.
Price: Jetta TDI = $21,605, Prius = $21,725
Horsepower: Jetta = 100hp, Prius = 110hp
Torque: Jetta = 177 lb-ft, Prius = 295 lb-ft (electric motor) + 82 lb-ft (gas engine)
Fuel Mileage: Jetta = 36 mpg city, 41 mpg highway Prius = 60 mpg city, 51 mpg highway
Annual fuel cost according to the EPA: Jetta TDI = $1152, Prius =$784
Annual Greenhouse gas emissions: Jetta = 5.6 tons, Prius = 3.4 tons
The winner in this case......The Prius.
The Prius is only $120.00 more to buy (not including incentives) yet will save you close to $400 a year on gas. Hybrids are not only more fuel efficient but they are much cleaner than diesels as well.
Take any hybrid car and compare it to a diesel vehicles in the same price range and you'll see that hybrids are far more fuel efficient.
