There are many theories about the Mona Lisa and whether or not she's half man and half woman. Many people claim that Mona Lisa is a self portrait of Leonardo Da Vinci as a woman, I personally believe that the Mona Lisa is nothing more than a self portrait of the great Renaissance artist. Da Vinci was an open Homosexual, who did not mind people watching him work, and perhaps Da Vinci dressed in women's clothes. People have been doing that for thousands of years, and even the great emperor Nero was gay. Yes, they did mention that fact that Mona Lisa was a half man and half woman in the book, The Da Vinci Code.

Actually the painting appears to be of a man and a woman combined because da Vinci tended to use male models when painting. Not that he did with the Mona Lisa: but other paintings show the usage of this technique. Many Renaissance artists did the same thing - leading, in some cases, to rather muscular women! (Look at a Michelangelo, for example). The book is, don't forget, FICTION. Some readers seem to forget the meaning of this word. Dan Brown does not claim that any of it is true.

The Da Vinci Code is actualy fiction but The Great Mona LIsa is not. And Mona LIsa is a potrait of Da Vinci himself. He painted himself while looking at a mirror and felt happy of the young face he saw and was confused about his sexuality, thats why you cant tell if Mona Lisa is smiling or smugging. Da Vinci always thought everything in a different way.

Regardless of the work of amusing fiction that is The Da Vinci Code, do you mean to say that when Da Vinci painted The Mona Lisa, he made the painting up with multiple images / features of a man and a woman? Like that he used one man's eyes and the mouth of some woman?
The smile is of someone having just broken wind (imo!)

Will people stop responding to The Da Vinci Code with cries of "It's Fiction!" Like in a pantomime? We Know!

No, I didn't know that before reading the book, but I like the painting. Although, the book is a work of fiction the author actually did a lot of research before writing it. He included some known facts in there. I wouldn't believe the existence of the holy grail but the thing about the Mona Lisa makes sense.

I had seen a television documentary once about great paintings in history and I had heard that Mona Lisa could actually be Da Vinci himself. Every work of art is open to many different interpretations. So, who could say with certainty what is right or wrong? Maybe it's true what you read in the book; many artists have been concerned with the representation of androgyny in painting, literature and film.

I've read The Da Vinci Code, too. It's a good mystery-thriller novel. But it's fiction...which means "made up." Nothing in a novel is certain to be "in fact."

Besides, all people have masculine and feminine features...men have nipples...women have testosterone. All the smile proves is that Da Vinci probably used a human being as a model.

The face of Mona Lisa was painted by Da Vinci on his time-travelling visit to Nazareth.
He only had one attempt to paint Jesus and Mary Magdalene so he decided to combine the two into one !
I suppose he was the first surrealist painter..........
Then again, I was thrown out of Sunday school for saying that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were a couple in love !

I saw the movie, and it didn't say anything about Mona Lisa being a man and woman combined. But now that you mention it, it does kind of make sense. Wow, I never thought of that before. I always thought it was a woman. ALWAYS
