It's dated 1988, and on the back, it has the wheat stalks with the writing "one troy ounce silver .999 fine"

Hi. I'm a coin dealer in the Midwest. What this is...is a generic one troy ounce silver round-it's not a coin; it's just a coin-shaped one ounce piece of pure silver. A couple of different refiners made these to have appeal to coin collectors who want to throw back some silver as an investment. It's basically only worth what the market price for silver happens to be (currently about $10 or so). If you are considering buying it, don't pay more than about $11.50-$12 or so for it in today's market.

Hope this info helped.

I'm not saying it's not real ... but in the 40's (during the war) copper was needed for ammunition, so the pennies that year are not the usual 'red' but a 'silver' COLOR because they're made of lead.

See if it might be one of these lead pennies.
They're not SUPER common, but they're around.
