In terms of total numbers of redshirt deaths per series, who do YOU think is the best captain?
Shouldn't a good captain take care of his/her crew, no matter how inconsequential they are?

A good captain needs to place the needs of the many over the needs of the few. If the sacrifice of one redshirt means saving the lives of many or all of the crew, than not only is it the right decision, it's mandatory. Every crew member on the ship knows that there is a chance they will lose their life... it's part of the job... like a soldier. Ever Captain must struggle with the possibility of having to send a crewman on a mission that could result in their death, but being able to make that decision is what seperates the good from the great.
You can't really compare the number of deaths per series, however, because the length of time that each series ran is different. You also have to consider the various situations that each Captain was faced with...
Jean Luc may have had more deaths than say, Kirk, but Piccard was also faced with much more difficult situations (ie - the Borg invasion). In addition, Janeway may have had the fewest deaths, but she also had the fewest crew members (and no real source of additional crew).
The way each dealt with the death of a crewman should also be considered...
Kirk was always quick to anger.
Janeway was always quick to get upset.
Sisco and Piccard handled deaths of crewmen the most logically... death is part of life and we sometimes must sacrifice one to ensure the survival of the many...
Live long and prosper.

Capt. Kathryn Janeway without a doubt. Come on, over 75 years away at over max speed just to get back to the right side of the galaxy and taking on a second crew at the same time. This is a real capt.

Depends on what dangers they had to face. The Borg are a lot tougher than the Hippies Kirk had to deal with for example.

I say Picard was better. He had brains as well as guts.

I don't get the question. Picard lost more because he had more episodes to fill...as a Borg he killed even more.

That does not make him a bad captain.

I'm a fan, not a bloody critic.
