Now that's a loaded question! Here are my five, in no particular order:
Devotion (live version) - Earth, Wind & Fire - Being a school teacher has been an experience with the best of times and the worst of times. Many nights I have sat and meditated to the meaning of this song in order to find the strength and courage to keep on fighting the good fight. Because if I don't do it, who will? If I don't do it now, when will it ever get done?
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix - The first line says it all, "There must be some kind of way out of here... Said the Joker to the Thief!" I have put this song on workout tapes for the last 20 years. Whenever I needed to dig deep for that last rep, I listened to Jimi in order to find that source.
Lopsy Lu - Stanley Clarke - What can I say? Stanley is just too dang funky for his own good. When I was 17, my sister and I saw Stanley live in Mannheim, Germany. I was the only one in that tiny theater that recognized the tune. After I stood and cheered loudly, Stanley came down off the stage (as he is wont to do) and played right there in front of us. That day still inspires me 20 years later.
So What - Miles Davis - No jazz musician would feel right about not including Miles in such a list. How to narrow such a body of work to one defining song?? I first played this song in high school after having listened to it for several years. It's still as smooth now as it was when he first recorded it.
Mannish Boy - Muddy Waters - Talk about an exuberance for LIFE! Muddy is the man. The recording I am talking about is off the "Hard Again" LP with Johnny Winter playing back up. Whoo! This is one blues song that will pick you right back up again.
Peace
VT
p.s. you didn't ask, but... if I had to pick an actor to play me it would be a younger Liam Neeson.
