Sorry buddy, due to EPA regulations you cannot purchase R-22 freon yourself. Though if your unit is that old, you might want to consider getting a new system, could drop your electris bills 50-100 a month depending on size and effeciency you get. If its a small leak, say 3 or so pounds low,, its ok to just top off the charge , but if its completly empty, or looses the charge again that season it will need to be found and repaired. And NO, there is no drop-in replacement for freon, the new R-410 Puron refigerant requires a complete system changeout.

It is against the law for a person not licensed to recharge freon.Why.reloading must take place without the possibility of discharge in to the atmosphere. You need to call a service person, because Where did the old freon go(check for leaks) is freon the problem(you could have bad valves in compressor/a flow constriction/water in the lines etc.

You should not let freon escape into the environment. It is against the law now.

Alternative gases that do not damage the environment come in cylinders. Special tools required. AC service people are the only ones who can do this. They will drain the freon safely into their container and reload the alternative one. You will not be able to do this. If you want to buy these tools, you probably are planning to do this for a living. Otherwise, it is not cost efficient.

This one item is not for do-it-yourselfers.

There are environmental issues with handling freon for older air conditioners. This is one of those cases where doing it yourself may not be the best choice. Hire a pro.
