Early on in its history (19th century), blacks and poor white farmers in Arkansas formed an alliance that very nearly seized control of state government in 1888. The passing of Jim Crow laws caused Arkansas Democrats to move even further to the left. One result of this was the election of Jeff Davis as Governor. Davis was followed by genuine reformism. Arkansas Democrats found themselves in the vanguard of the Progressive wing of the national party.

Hey I do take insult to Freety's remark of inbreeding. I was born and raised in Arkansas for 18 years before I moved away. I however am not Democrat. I am a Republican. I don't know why so many are Democrat. The only reason I can think of would be that there are alot of low income people in Arkansas. People that are low income tend to be Democrat. Please people from Arkansas don't take offense to the low income remark. It is just the only explanation I could think of.

I think it a taught concept in Arkansas. They figure that ALL Politicians are crooks, so, instead of hearing all the Bull and different Names to know, it easier to just check off the Democrats at the Election Booth.
Good example of Arkansas Politics. Bass Pro Shops was going to build a big store in North Little Rock (N.L.R./State). They wanted a Tax break for a number of years to establish (Normal Business in America). N.L.R./State would not give the Tax break. Hearing people talk, they said; "Yea, we showed them, they can pay taxes too"! Well, Bass Pro Shops went to another State that would work with them and provide 700 people who wanted Jobs! I guess that State figured they get income from the Income Tax until the Tax Break was over, looking for the long term gain and jobs for their people.

Clinton's legacy is still felt in Arkansas. If you read President Clinton's autobiography My Life, he explains in details the political climate of Arkansas. It wasn't always Democratic, yet the Democratics finally won out thanks to Clinton.
