I assume since you know the severity of the injury you have seen a doctor, if my assumption is wrong, DO see a doctor and follow their advice.
If the advice you have gotten from your doctor isn't working for you, get a second opinion. Find a Knee specialist, not just an Ortho-guy.
You don't mention any medication. Use NSAIDs like Ibuprofen and Naproxen, (Motrin and Aleve) They reduce inflammation, swelling, which reduces the discomfort and can help with the rehab. Follow the instructions on the OTC meds, or follow your doctor's advice for increased doses.
MCL's take time, be moderate with your use of the knee. In time it will heal, if you don't re-injure it rehabbing too fast.

First of all, if you haven't been to a doctor, you should do so. Get a physical therapy schedule worked out. In the mean time....Ice it for 15 minutes about 5 or 6 times a day, for about 3 or 4 days. Then try icing it for 15 min 3 or 4 times a day. During the 3-4 times a day, after icing, lay on a flat surface (preferrably a table, or floor) and do straight leg raises with the leg of the injured knee. Raise your leg (keeping it straight) up and far as you can, SLOWLY, and lower it back to the surface, SLOWLY. Do about 10 times. Another exercise you can try is terminal leg raises. Sit on the end of a table, the fold of your knees just off the edge, and have a chair or some sturdy object that is just slightly lower than the table. Put the foot on the sturdy object, raise slowly to straighten, and lower back to the sturdy object, SLOWLY. Try taking ibuprofen too.
*Keep in mind, a visit to a doctor/physical therapist is best*

Professional rehab. It's covered by insurance. I had it - WOW - what a difference. I never thought my knee would feel this good again.
It's not easy, and a good rehab won't let you take it easy, but it is SO worth it!
Do not waste your time and energy doing this on your own - you will be amazed.
