The media is making such a huge deal about this fight in Kansas during a basketball game. If you haven't seen it goto cnn.com and click on the Watch Free Video -> Basketball beating.
Regardless of who pushes who first, if you push me, I should have the right to kick your tail. That's what this guy did, he got pushed and he said you're going to pay for that. Next time someone pushes me, what am I supposed to do? Let them push me again? Ask if I can get him some Gatorade? Call him massa? Even if it wasn't the right thing to do per say, it wasn't all that wrong in my opinion.

Apparently Zen didn't understand my question correctly. A basketball game, one guy pushes, then the other guy pushes but harder, so then the first guy roundhouse punches him in the face and beats the crap out of him. The media is showing this as if the kid who beat the other up is a monster, it could have been listed as self defense or retalliation, but not a savage beating by someone that deserves to be in a cage.

1) It's just a push. People are going to be immature. You got to learn to ignore it.
2) Fighting between players accomplishes nothing positive at all. In fact, it harms the sport by making the players look like immature children. I mean, if the person who was pushed beats the living daylights out of the other player, what good gets accomplished? There's the lawsuits, the hospital stays, the hospital bills, the controversy, the news media, etc. Too much drama.
3) Two wrongs don't make a right. Granted, a push is considered legally an assault. But that's where it should've ended.
4) I don't like your "Call him massa?" comment either. You should probably watch how you phrase things, because that sounds like the comment of someone who has racist tendencies or feelings. Granted, I'm not saying you're racist, but I'm saying you should watch how you say things.
5) Even if the kid did "deserve" to get beat up, if that were true, then we all "deserve" to get beat up for something stupid we have done in the past. I would assume that if we're all deserving then we would all try to have more patience with our fellow human beings.

I'm sorry, but no, I don't feel that that kid deserved to get beat up. Among other things, it is humankind's ability to not get caught up in mindless physical altercations that sets us apart from the animals. There are other more intelligent more effective means of dealing with conflict than putting someone in a half nelson or breaking someone's nose.
Besides, like some others mentioned, this was an athletic event where sportsmen were competing... with the expectation of conducting themselves in a sportsman-like manner... which includes being respectful to the opposing team. BOTH players were in the wrong: the first for starting it, the second for finishing it. And two wrongs don't make a right.

You believe it is someones "right" to assault someone for being pushed? That's sad. But it's not just you, it seems like a good chunk of our socirty feels that way. Where did this mentality come from? That's the same mentality that says someone should sue McDonalds because the coffee is to hot and they spill it on themselves.
Ever play ball? how many times do you get pushed? That kid waaay over reacted. And leave that "massa" cr@p out of it. Acting civilized and with sportsmanship is not licking the "massa"s boots.

Excuse me but the player that was attacked states on CNN that he was shoved first and responded in-kind. I think the tape bears that out if you watch the shove.
During play that kind of "in-fighting" is expected to some degree. The second player simply jumped snotty and sucker-punched the first player and then proceeded to knock him senseless. It is reprehensible and he should be prosecuted. It's basketball not boxing.
It's not about race it's about behavior. This guy left the realm of the game and turned it into a street fight. For that he deserves to be punished.
Anyone who supports this behavior is simply stating that they would of done the same thing and they should be ashamed for supporting and encouraging violent behavior.

I have played basketball all my life in various levels, playground, high-school, summer leagues, and have never seen anything like that. You get pushed at most you push back, you don't assault the other player.

This happened because the sport role models are nothing but over paid animals them selves and the parents have not done their duty in teaching their son control. He should be baned from high school sports period. WE ARE NOT ANIAMLS

Have you ever heard of "sportsman-like conduct"?
Self-defense is one thing, but - a PUSH?
Learn some self control. Lean to let things go, and walk away.
Insecure people always feel that they have something to "prove."
Real men choose their battles wisely.
That is my opinion, anyway.
