Where I live in Texas, there are FIVE spanish stations but I'd like to see some German, Italian, French, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Australian, etc. stations.
All those stations that show nothing but info commercials, lose weight commercials and selling junk jewelry and dolls could be turned into stations showing foreign television shows and movies. On American television, it's as though the rest of the world doesn't exist except, of course, Spanish television. Why not show German TV also?

There would still be tons of American television for goodness sake. What's wrong with learning about the rest of the world and seeing what people from other countires are like? Expand your horizons!

Happy to field this one.
America's top export is entertainment. We are the standard to which the world is generally held, for better or worse. Satellite channels in languages other than Spanish take care of the niche market.
An example: the Italian audience in most specific urban locations is probably not large enough to support a station, and for those like you seeking the mere novelty of watching programming in Greek or French, you probably wouldnt tune in often enough to generate the numbers needed for ad revenue.

Puppy Zwolle got it right -- no money in it.
The cable companies don't get programming for free, they have to pay for it. They get the money to pay for it by selling ads. Ad prices are based on viewers. No viewers, no money.
When it comes to content, there are cultural problems. Humor doesn't travel very well from culture to culture. Witness the fact that most American think that most British humor isn't all that humorous or that the French think that Jerry Lewis is a comedic god.
Drama has same problem. How many ever go to foreign films, even the Oscar nominees?
Low veiwership means no money. No money means no show.

It's just money. I'm in LA and we have tons of local programming that is geared toward foreign audiences, but I don't think that's what you're talking about, I think you're talking more about programming from the actual foreign countries. All I can think of is BBC America. I would be interested in seeing programming from other countries as well but too many people here don't realize anything exists beyond our borders so there's no way a network is going to waste their money.
Just to clarify something...we are taught history other than American history in our schools, the problem isn't that we aren't taught....it's that we don't care.

I think frenchy summed it up better than anything I could say. Americans are very self involved. They do history in school but only American history and you have a world series that has three AMERICAN teams in it. Since when is America the world. I rest my case.

because no one really likes to read subtitles... so they assume you will not be interested in them..
hey but think about it, more american movies or dramas are influenced by non-american stories..
search for the question "Why do all these horror movies now have a creepy kid in them?".. i answered that based on what i feel and notice.. maybe after u read that, u'll realise that theres a little asian or european in american made shows too..so you are not really missing out that much
