You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes.

Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.

Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs

For private foundation grants, the best and most comprehensive resource is the Foundation Center http://www.fdncenter.org. They are the leading resource in grants from foundations and private sources. Alas, it is not free. It's a subscription based website ($19.95 per month) so you may want to get into the database and get everything you need in one month. It is worth the $19.95 investment, I assure you

Not real sure the Government actually helps in this area. Now, what you can try is "Foot Work" or let your "Fingers do the Walking" and phone people. Non-Profit/Charitable Organizations rely mostly on the Donations of people. There a Corporations that will donate too, but, remember, others know this and hit them often for Donations. There are private rich Individuals who will give and usually a large sum if you show a worthy cause and Accountability. Many Solicitors (Profit/Non Profit) buy mailing lists that Categorize people who buy certain products and give to certain charities. You can buy these lists and some come with "Peel & Stick" labels for you to prepare your letters. So, this about what is involved it a "Nutshell". The Grant would be a large sum of money you can solicit from a Corporation or Very Rich Person. You will need the appropriate IRS Tax ID's and Numbers to provide you Donators with a Tax Deductable Form for Tax Purposes.
