It depends how long you are there for, ask your self, do you get bored staying on one field and want extra variety, or do you like to stay with one field and check out all the challenges it has to offer.
There are a lot of fields to check out and a lot of offers available. Social life is great in Queenstown as well as in Wanaka.

either towns, its probably a touch more expensive in queenstown for living costs. but it only takes just over an hour to get to wanaka from queenstown. personally i would stay in queenstown, the atmosphere there is better and more to do after youve been 'up the mountain'
