There could be a physical electrical fault that sparks across the PC's on switch, but it's more than likely you have the same problem as I had - a virus. dowload norton anti virus from limewire.com and this will get rid of it.

You could have some sort of odd power surge. I would try to unplug it at night. Scan for viruses and spyware too.

maybe scheduled tasks is on tellign computer to turn on and virus scan etc during off peak hours

The only reason that could happen is if when you are shutting down and the dialog box is at restart instead of shut down.
