I have a 5 year old little girl and was never married to her father. I am looking into getting full custody of her and was wondering what the difference was between the 3 and how I go about getting what I want.

You really need to talk to a lawyer before you make up your mind fully, but here is the gist of what you want to know. Full custody means she lives with you 24/7, but can visit her Dad. Joint means you share custody....at your house half, his house half time. Sole custody means you have her 24/7 and don't share custody or visits with dad. Hope this helps, but really, talk to a lawyer.

It all depends on the laws of the state you are in. Full custody is when one parent has the child the most. That parent makes the decisions for the child, school medical and so on. There is visitation in full custody. The non- custodial parent gets certain days of the week or every other weekend. Joint custody when both parents get the child equally (optimal for child). That is what I have. The state I live in didn't award joint the parents must agree to it on there own. I think that is the way most states will be. I fthe parents can't agree on it it's hard for them tio enforce it. Sole custody I am not sure probably if there is abuse or something then a parent would get sole custody
