Good question! The only answer I can come up with is for the same reason people use lots of O's in loooooooooooong words.

"One should just say what they have to say in a brief and coherent manner, and one should realize that you lose your reader when you ramble on and on."
As long as we're knocking people's writing skills, try this:
One should not splice two sentences with a comma to create an overly long sentence.
This would work better:
People should answer in a brief and concise manner to avoid losing readers.
However, people can write in whatever manner they please as long as it is within the rules.
I just found it ironic that you are bashing people's writing skills without proof reading your own post.

Perhaps it's simply because the question is complex or requires a degree of explanation to answer or clarify it. If the answer is coherent, informative, and intelligently written, why ya bitchin'?
If you think someone's answer is too long and boring, skip it and go on to one that's short and simple enough for you.
And the FIRST basic rule of writing is to write clearly so as to be understood. MY long answers are written with the assumption that my targeted audience is actually seeking information and are not a bunch of uneducated morons with attention spans so limited they can't understand anything longer than a by-line.

Short answer is not the best. Long answer makes you think they are educated and they will be forgiven for making any mistake. Other passages can make up for what they say as incorrect. If you only have 3 sentences, one mistakes makes you only 66.666666666 percent correct. If you have 30 sentences, one mistake makes you 96.66666 percent correct. There is a big difference, the more you say, the less wrong you get because you are always repeating your main point, which in most case is correct.

I heard this line from a tv preacher( ACH) but it made sense:
If you can not explain something clearly and concisely one of 2 things is happening. Either you dont know what you are talking about or you are lying to me.

For me long answers are fine, it's the long questions that turn me off. I don't answer them.
