If he is well-rested after five hours of sleep then this isnt a problem. Different people have different sleep requirements. If he is still feeling tired and cant concentrate then he needs to go to the Dr. there may be an underlying medical condition that is causing this.

I'd need to know more detail - like his age and whats going on in his life right now.
But - it might be that he doesn't need more than 5 hours sleep.
If he feels tired, as if he's not getting enough sleep, I would suggest trying all of the following (not at once!!)
Physical exhaustion!!!! Whatever this means - a work out, or perhaps doing all his mom's housework, or helping an old lady with her garden, or having a lot of sex.
A long hot bath. The Japanese swear by this. 30 minutes soaking.
Hot chocolate or other milky drink.
A very boring book.
Hypnotherapy tapes.(I make a good one!!)
If he still wakes after 5 hours - the main thing is, try not to worry, change the attitude about it. "Oh well!" rather than "No again!!!"
Get out of bed and go to the bathroom, and maybe make a milky drink. Smooth the pillows down, get into bed - and he will find that if he needs the sleep and lets himself go, he will get back to sleep again.
Hope this helps.

It depends on your friend's age and health. As you get older, you don't sleep as much, or sleep as soundly. He could also have a health problem that interrupts his sleep. I would kill for 5 hours solid sleep.

Maybe he needs to do more strenuous exercise/work to make himself knackered at the end of the day.
Other than that, maybe his body clock like that. I know my mum get up at 4am even though she quit her early-morning job a long time ago.

Tell him to play more sports so he is tired. He might sleep longer.
