Leprechauns were a very small piece of Irish folk lore. When I was a kid, I bought a book of a hundred traditional Irish fairy tales. Only three of them had leprechauns. However, they are the most unique of all the friendly Irish folk lore, with only the Banshee being also distinctly Irish, and really, who wants to put a Banshee on their Irish-based party favors? Now a pot of gold wielding, wish granting, crafty, imaginative little man in green cloths, that's cool.

They have been known to attach themselves to human families and even follow them when they move, which is how there come to be leprechauns in places like North America and Australia.

I shot a leprachaun once. He was stealing my fishing rod out of the garden shed. I stuffed him and now use him to scare the crows away from my turnips.
