Through all NZ news mediums, and through plenty of research online (and I know how) I have not been able to find any reference to this accident in New Zealand.

I have been able to find plenty of information on other accidents however, which makes me wonder why such an event would not be reported.

Are you sure of the details and information that you have given?

I am SO very sorry to hear of your loss. I hope you have/seek the support you need to get through this difficult time.

I am in America, so I may not be giving you the best answer, but I found this information on a backpacking site (the link is below):

Rotorua Police Station:
Fenton Street, opposite Tourism Rotorua Travel and Information Centre
Rotorua Police 24 hours: 07 348 0099, Fax: 07 343 1604
Confidential Local Victim Support: 07 349 9471

I figure that, if you start with her hometown's police station you might find a kind soul there who will help trace the incident, the appropriate police contact information and the proper person(s) to call to get the information you need.

I don't know what Australia's policies are about giving out specific information related to death over the phone... I know in here victim and family privacy rules closely guard information like that and getting detailed info over the phone is virtually impossible.

I wish you luck.

I am so sorry for your loss. I've been searching a bit, and unfortunately, I could not find anything.

What I did find was a link to the local newspaper. Maybe you could contact them to see if they have any information.
