as for the genre? these guys were so spectacular that they should have a genre all of their own. most of it's rock music but i think it's really distinctive so i wouldn't compare it with anyone.
and if wanna see what they were like, i recommend their film 'the song remains the same' - the 1st half is kind of monty python meets pink floyd, the 2nd half is from a concert they did in madison square gardens in new york in (i think) 1972. make sure you've got a great soundsystem hooked up to your tv :)

The best zepplin songs huh. Well I don't know if I can remember 20 of them but I can name quite a few good ones. Stairway to heaven, black dog, misty mountain hop, going to california, dazed and confused, tangerine, hot dog, the song remains the same, black mountain side, communication breakdown, rock and roll, kashmir, the list just goes on and on. If you really are into zepplin then go buy the dvd that has the cover that looks like a desert scene. It is a two disc set and has their best performances from many different concerts. It totally rocks. There is also a book called Hammer of the Gods that is great also. I read it twice when I was younger. It is kind of a biography but it definitly wasn't boring.

Best I can do for ya is tell you one of the finest Rock Songs of ALL time is "Hey Hey What Can I do" by Zep. It's really a folk song in my opinion. For sure I believe it's the best of Led Zep's work. And yes, I am a huge fan of nearly every song they ever recorded. But I never saw them in concert..
I saw an Interview where Page said they as a group felt they were really a folk band. I agree!!!
