If you like your job--or simply wish to keep it--you NEVER make the boss look even near being wrong--leaving within normal business hours has the appearance of unprofessional behavior whither the situation is or isn't----and you certainly do not want to be lying to cover for them or anyone else----So--the stepped out of the office and unavailable tag in this case IS the correct approach and ALWAYS make the offer of taking a message available to the call-in client because it is by that the client walks away feeling that the intended contact was made anyway

As long as you don't tell a lie, you are not obligated to provide specific details about the activities of someone else at work. For instance, you could say that the person is not available to come to the phone and ask if you could take a message. Saying that he stepped away from the office is one of those statements that I might feel uncomfortable using because it gives the impression that he will be back sometime that day.

It can look bad on your company if people think the boss has left early - even if there is a good reason. Therefore it's good to show some diplomacy - Either say he's out of the office and take a message, or if your boss has a mobile, suggest they try that number (check with him to make sure he's ok with this)

Sounds like you're asking, "Should I tell lies to cover for my supervisor?" It depends on whether or not you plan on staying with this job for a while, and whether or not he treats you well.

If your boss is a jerk, and you don't need the job, tell callers that he just stepped away from the office... to go out and buy some porn. LOL

Honesty is the best policy, but sometimes we must respect the privacy of our boss but case to case bases!White lies( a little bit of lie just to avoid trouble) is doing right things,I mean little wrongdoings leads to a right decision, next time ask oyur boss what to do if the situation happens again, that would be resulted to a harmonious relationship between you and your boss!

Without getting into whats right and wrong, I would do as your boss says. However, if his boss askes you where he is I would not lie.

in the meantime look for another job.
good luck.

I just usually say "He isn't in right now, Can I take a message?" and if they reply "When will he be back?" just be honest. "I'm not certain. Perhaps he could call you back when he returns." This lets them know, [hey! he's not here, i'm not telling you where he went, and if he wants to he'll call you back when he's good and ready], but in a nice way!:)

U should say 'he stepped out for a minute, but you can leave a message and I will ensure that he recieves it".

Just say he stepped away. If it happens too much, they'll ask him where he steps away to. Not your problem then.
