why do babies sleep with their butt in the air?

for anyone who is interested, i'm just curious because its so cute!! and i've always wondered.

Because for 9 months the baby was in a fetal position.( A position of the body at rest in which the spine is curved, the head is bowed forward, and the arms and legs are drawn in toward the chest.)

Placing a baby on a flat surface(like a bed)face down, the baby naturally wants to assume the position that is most comfortable for himself that not too long ago he was privy to.

Hence: Butt in the air.

I like Gray Matter's Answer to this one, As the babys get older they will find a position that they are most comfortable with and that may or may not include bundled up with butt in the air.

Not all do. Those who do are usually sleeping in a fetal position--the same position they are used to spending most of their time in. They will outgrow it at some point (different for different babies). And some babies who *don't* like it will suddenly start sleeping in a fetal position several months later.

I think they sleep with their butt in the air because, they slept in the same possition in the womb, and that makes them feel comportable and secure.
