I am so with you. I think it is because the next generation is not expected to learn how to spell. Letter writing is dying out fast.
Maybe one alternative is for these people to actually use the spelling check button. It is very hard to take someone seriously when they can't even put together one sentence with proper spelling. I am so glad you asked this question.

Often, it's a matter of typing too fast. Often, it's a matter of the questioner or answerer being of an origin other than N.American or British.
I think we should focus on communication, rather than correctness. As an English as a Second Language teacher, I find that sometimes making yourself understood is far more important than having good spelling skills.
If someone gives me a good answer to my question, I don't mind if it is spelled incorrectly.... HOWEVER
having said all that. When I see some spelling mistakes, I assume the answerer is a)not a native speaker, b)uneducated, or c) a very young person.
A simple typo is obvious... "don't tyr to figure this out..."
A matter of ignorance is also obvious.... "you should take you're friend to..."
A matter of young people is obvious "make sure u r not L8..."
And ESL issues are obvious "why the pepole are always doing bad to each other?"
Whatever the reason, lets be happy that we can communicate freely

I totally agree. If they could read at all they could see the "check spelling" tab in the upper right corner. But have you noticed that over half if the "questions" make absolutely no sense at all? I realize that not everyone speaks or has a working knowledge of the English language. Maybe what we need here is one of those universal language translators like the ones on Star Trek.

I agree to some extent. It's not always a matter of not being able to spell, but rather just typing too quickly and not paying attention. Also, younger people who've been growing up with text messaging just naturally use abbreviations and short-cut messages.
However, proper spelling is important, especially on resumes, exams, etc, and it makes one appear more intelligent. It may not be such a big deal on Y! Answers, but if one gets too lax it may become a habit that's hard to break.

Yes it is annoying and it's really sad that they don't use the spellchecker.
I mean come on just click check spelling how hard is that?
Plus just look at the Yahoo! Answers Community Guidelines Content & Usage Rule # 8 USE ENGLISH ONLY: Please do not use other languages or symbols. Also, spelling and grammar count! Be sure to check your spelling and grammar, as content that is unreadable due to excessive typos may also be deleted.
Yahoo! Answers Community Guidelines

So another good reason to use spellchecker right there.

I would not be talking if I were you. Check your Grammer. For Example, (Why can't anyone spell on this site.) is the same as (Why can not anyone spell on this site) Can't is the same as Can not.

People take shortcuts, with letters meaning words, like "c u" being see you, and all that.
The internet is famous for those...
But you are right to a point, I have seen autrocious spellings on here, and wonder where our education system has led us to...
Now, did I spell autrocious right, or is it atrocious??? hmmmm ;)
I wish you well..
