i have a blonde friend and she is not this stereotypical image at all
so why are they given such titles

Dumb blonde is a stereotype, typically applied to women with blonde hair color, which achieved a degree of prominence in popular usage. Paris Hilton is also considered a prominent dumb blonde judging on her many escapades that leak into the tabloids and the media.
So, it has nothing to do with Blond hair, its just that some people have taken advantage of thier hair colour to make millions leaving a large community of blond girls to pay for their foolishness.

Because people feel the need to apply stereotypes. Blondes just got the dumb label. Redheads got the feisty label. Brunettes got the boring label. That's just how life is.
And to 20Dub06 - Winona Ryder is a blonde apparently, almost white. She dyes it because otherwise she just looks like a giant dark pair of eyes.

I think that stereotype started in the 50's with actresses like Marilyn Monroe playing brainless blonde bombshells.

It's same with people who study alot. They call them nerds. It's just the way world is but who gives a damn what world thinks. Blondes ain't bimbos.
I know many who top lawyers, and some are judges. I know a millionnaire who is blonde and she built her business from scratch.
I think it's jelousy. Hey, they do look good, not all, but many do look good, feel confident and women want that but think its about the colour of the hair instead the beauty from within.

a long time ago, blondes were considered the most fertile of all women, so all they were seen to be good for was having kids, so no one focused on their intelligence.
So over time this changed from being dumb, to sluts and bimbos and all sorts of things.
Basically its bull crap.

no really I made my hair blond when I was doing my maths degree and everyone - including the friends who know me as a dark hair started to treat me differently-
so I was the same person but people treated me differently (as they thought I was thik) just because I changed my hair colour!!
