If you're asking when the word "gay" came to be associated with homosexuals, particularly males, it emerged from Britain in the late 19th century as a sort of "codeword" for being able to identify each other.

Those were in the days when we didn't have a strong identity in the culture and wouldn't say that "fruit" is a bigoted word to use in connection with homosexual people.

As others have already indicated...I think you have these two words switched around. "Fruit" is a negative slang word for being gay or homosexual, not the other way around.

Gay doesn't mean a fruit. Gays are people not fruit you homophobic jerk.

gay used to mean happy, and for a time it also refered to a homosexual man. but according to my daughter i guess its meaning has changed again. when she refers to something that might happen in school as being so gay. lord knows whats next. back to happy?
