Cookies have, for some reason, gained a rather sinister image. But they really are simple and harmless. (Note that this question became so popular that HowStuffWorks now has a complete article on cookies.)
A cookie is just one or more pieces of information stored as text strings on your machine. A Web server sends you a cookie and the browser stores it. The browser then returns the cookie to the server the next time the page is referenced.
you may clean up your cookies by going into your network and internet connections from your control panel from the start button choice and going to internet options deleting cookies and files as well

when you visit a website, the site puts a cookie in your computer...its a marker so the next time you visit the same website it recocnizez you. some are tracking cookies that track what other stores and sites you visit, these types slow down your computer because they are running all the time.
you can go to tools at the top, select internet options and you'll see where you delete your cookies.
if you want to view your cookies there is a folder for them

You can have a look at cookies on your computer through "Internet Options" in IE. These are stored on your computer after the website requests your browser to do so.
It contains bits of information e.g. last time you visited the site; and can be retrieved by that particular website

Cookie is a very small applett that contains details about your visit to a particular web site.
The sites do this because it is time-saving since the next time you enter the site your details can be recalled easily.
But, some cookies may attack your system. And also be aware of Spy-wares & Ad-wares that affect your PC adversely.
Thank You

a cookie is a little file that is saved on your computer to tell the websites that you are visiting that you are visiting. eg: when you login to yahoo, yahoo will save a cookie to your computer so that when you're surfing through all the yahoo pages, they all say that you are logged in because they can read the info from the cookie.
