The majority of English people are very nice people and i have many really good English friends. So why do some English people try to give all English people a bad name by abusing the Scots?

there is good and bad in everyone i too have some very good scotish friends, the best. But i have like you have met english that abuse scottish i have met scottish that abuse the english, it is a shame that we all just cant get on, playful banter is ok but when it gets nasty it does make me sad. It happens all over the world a few pratts spoil it for everyone, you only had to see the papers last week about the scottish boy wearing an england top what has the world come to. I myself as an english person wear a scottish rugby top i also wear an english one and i always support any country from gb including southern ireland when playing sport, i think we should all stick together.

English people are very well mannered in general ( apart from the football louts !) they have great sences of humour and they know how to enjoy themselves. Yes, they like a grumble and they are open minded to the rest of the world.
English people may appear to abuse the Scots, however thats where the word banter comes in. English people would happily drink a good old pint with a Scot and tell him to his face that they cant bear them. The two would then roll laughing and get on with life. Not too many people take everything to heart. I live in the US and have to watch what I say very carefully as to not upset people by my concept of HUMOUR !!

I would like to think that when it comes to the Scots, they get bitchier than us.
I wish everyone would leave history where it belongs...in the past.
The English as a whole are a great, fun loving, friendly bunch of people, but unfortunatly there will always be those who spoil it for the rest of us, by giving the English a bad reputation - for example, the fans in Germany at the mo. I would like to appologise on there behalf, but I have done nothing wrong, so I am going to have to settle for feeling guilty and embarassed...again.
But don't worry, we are not all a bad bunch, most of us are great !!!!!!

I hadn't realised that English people abused the Scots. I am happy to tell you that I haven't heard of that for many many years.
I guess there might be some enmity between the English and the Scots because of the rich history. But if anything, I'd say the Scots are more llikely to be scathing of the English!!! Perhaps the English feel they are defending themselves.
Who started it?!!!
Perhaps it is inevitable for rivalry to develop between two nations. English and Scottish are both British.....perhaps they feel they need to assert their identity.
Good luck to them, I say. (Irish/Italian myself...)

Oh come on, it isn't just the Scots! The English will abuse ANYBODY! The Welsh, the Irish, the Trench (PARTICULARLY the French), The Germans, the Italians... ESPECIALLY Americans...
No, the English are not particular, they are happy to abuse anybody who has not lived in the same street as them for at least 3 generations.

Sadly it tends to be 'tit for tat'.
The papers have recently have been full of Scottish people saying support anyone but England for the football world cup.
Perhaps it is a few Scots that are getting Scotland a bad name?

I reckon it's football; English people are nice people, but English football fans are not! As soon as we see a football the whole of England divides and the fans just start getting mouthy and insults all the competition (scotland, wales, france, anyone we can reach) and the rest of us hide under tables. It's a scary world out there, I haven't been able to come out from under my table for weeks!

You answered your own question (SOME do, the majority don't).
Scotland and England have a special love/hate rivalry ... mostly it is good natured but some folks take it to extreme. The current situation with the football is a good example.
I am Scottish and while some comments I see on here (and elsewhere) I find mildly offencive (and that is not the "our team is better than yours drivel") mostly it is just playground stuff I can rise above.

Some people have different views on things, and those people don't have to be part of a specific contemparary society... i.e. I think the people you hang out with have a different perspective on the Scots than some others.
