♡The Japanese sand bath is called 'sunaburo' 砂風呂. Taking a sand bath is a great experience and I highly recommend it. At the sand baths, bathers are buried in naturally heated sand up to the neck. A special yukatta is worn for this. (There are different types of sand too, example, black sand...) Take a look:

About 15 minutes in the sand will sweat out your bodies impurities and leave you feeling refreshed. Relaxation is also a key point. The steam sand bath,as a Japanese style sauna,is very popular among foreigners. It's quite an experience. (*^o^*) The various types of baths in Japan are said to have many therapeutic benefits. You should try all of them at least once. I personally prefer the natural mineral hot spring. Hope this helps!♡
☆Take a look at this English site, since the sand is heated naturally by the hot spring water, it says that: "The hot spring water contains sodium chloride which has many medicinal benefits. And it can be used to treat neuralgia,rheumatism,lumbago,sub-acromial bursitis, arthritis, paralytic.
symptoms after a stroke, fractures, sensitivity to the cold, cramps, and other ailments." *In my opinion, hot spring and sand bath are two different things though.

It's to be re-invigerated after a long, tiring day at work. It relaxes the muscles, improves the flow of blood, and many onsen hot spring baths also have healing qualities. There is nothing better than to cleanse yourself completely outside of the bath with a shower, and then get into a hot bath. By the way, if you feel hot in a stiflingly hot summer, take a HOT shower. It will make your body temperature adjust, so that you won't feel as hot.
