because its in the norhtern side of the korean peninsula, in the south lies South Korea. To put it clearly the korea which lies in the north is north korea and that which lies in the south is south korea

yeah it is messed up and arbitrary, left to the whims of the leaders of powerful contries like much of the borders in the world. There should only be one Korea.
