First of all, when they came to the US from England they were the first Rock and Roll band. They harmonized beautifully and wrote all of their songs. They wrote R&R songs and love ballads. They were music geniouses.

The Beatles were brilliant because they were doing music that nobody had done before in the birthplace of the "english" language - the United Kingdom. It could never have been a French or Hispanic group. American black rock n rollers already filled the role of a musical force that are essentially unpalatable to white America.
Most importantly the Beatles tailored 'rebellious image' then appealed to the general masses without alienating any groups - Ringo's clever "mocker" (mod or rocker) answer says it all.
They were the biggest musical act of the 20th century and EMI estimated that by 1985, the band had sold over one billion records worldwide.
Their early original material fused elements of early American rock 'n roll, pop, and R&B into a new form of popular rock 'n roll that swept the world. The band kick-started the British Invasion of the USA - Beatlemania, laid the groundwork for the rock culture of the 1960s, and established the prototype for the self-contained rock group. They helped pioneer more advanced, multi-layered arrangements in both rock and pop and were instrumental in the development of some of 1960s rock's dominant styles, such as folk-rock, hard rock and psychedelia.
The impact of The Beatles extended well beyond music. Their clothes, hairstyles, actions, and even choice of instruments made them trend-setters throughout the decade, while their growing social awareness, reflected in the development of their music, saw their influence extend into the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s.
The Beatles are unsurpassed indeed.

They weren't that good - very over-rated! People think they were brilliant because they were the first of their type.
A similar myth exists about Elvis. Such a lack of talent who just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Many more gifted artists followed their lead though, citing them as their inspiration.
Best Beatle?
John Lennon - Over-rated, but capable of greatness
Paul McCartney - Mostly sh*te, but with occasional flashes of talent
George Harrison - Genuinely talented but under-used as a Beatle. Solo work easily better than the others.
Ringo Starr - There was a spare seat on the tour bus!

They were just a once in a lifetime combination who really clicked when it came to songwriting. They also had a great producer, who I'm sure helped arrange their songs.

I think it's because none of their songs actually had a dance beat, so their music wont ever date.
