Because its a diversion story. The vast majority of media are controlled by conservative corporations, which means they are republican. They divert the attention of the American public elsewhere, like rattling keys in front of a crying infant, and a good deal of the American public falls for it. These corporations will do whatever is best for the people in power that are able to tack easily overlooked items sentences long onto bills that take up reams of paper. For instance, one senator might pen a bill that establishes a few small wildlife refugees but somewhere in the middle tack on something that gives cable companies the right to double your bill if you are a day late. It happens all the time. Politicians are big on making up a proposal that sounds wonderful and altruistic while slipping something REALLY lucrative in for their cronies.
So that's why, because they can and Americans do not read the newspaper which is just as guilty of the same offenses but at least if one read a newspaper or 2 a week on top of watching the news, he'd get a better sense of what was really going on in the world.

I don't think the media got "stuck" on anything. It was news that interested customers of the media. If the media want to sell advertising, they have to have viewers, listeners, readers.
Parents, friends, family members may have used the media (drummed up attention) to help find Natalie or find out what happened to her.
The victim was a beautiful, blond, white teenager, who was intelligent, accomplished and on her last fling before college.
Do you think anyone in this country would pay attention to a headline story about a teenage black boy missing from a village in Kenya, where the presumption was that he was kidnapped and sold into slavery? I don't.

She was a rich, white women. Of all the guys who murdered their wives, why did that one guys trial get alot of attention? He was a rich, white man. Of all the parents who murder their child, why did that child model get all the attention? Her family was rich and white. Even worse things happen to poorer people, but the media's not interested in covering that.
