Absolutely. You have to be strict to get anything done, and you have to strive really hard to be fair and involve all the pupils. This is not as easy as it sounds in a class of thirty plus. At teacher training college, we were given a saying which really works - don't smile until Christmas. I think some teachers make the mistake of trying to befriend their students too early on. Once the respect is lost, it's almost impossible to get it back. So, any new teachers out there - don't smile until Christmas! Be really strict, but fair, until you've got them where you need them!

If the students come to class self-disciplined, then the teacher would not have to discipline (and would not have to be strict). Only when the students are not disciplined does the teacher need to be strict, and make fair judgements.

All teachers are at their best and can teach their knowledge if the students can all discipline themselves. In fact it is the lack of student discipline that is causing many good and knowledgeable teachers to leave the profession (50% in 5 years -- one of the highest turnover rates for professionals).

And one last thing, teachers are not entertainers. Do you think the better schools have teachers that are more entertaining? The better schools are not results of the teachers, but the result of the students being more self-disciplined and caring to learn.

If what you mean by "strict" is teachers who set a standard and hold to it, then strict is good. The consistency is important to students because they need guidelines and structure. It also means the teacher will more than likely hold those standards for her/his own teaching performance as well.

Strict doesn't mean that the teacher can't have a sense of humour and a sense of fun.

(Without the "fair" aspect then strict just turns into a screaming match that that would be the absolutely worst type of teaching situation.)

Definately.
Children are like puppies. They are happier knowing where they stand with people. A teacher needs to be strict to be able to control his/her classroom. He should be fair because each child is different with different problems and personalities.

My favourite teacher in school was Mr Henderson. That was the only class where I actually learnt something because he was so strict no child would dare get out of line. However, on the odd occasion where a child was unable to do their homework etc, he was fair enough to discuss the problem and allow them extra time. He would only ever give you 2 chances though!!

I think my era was one of the last to allow chalk throwing to get childrens' attention. It did work, and I believe if they still allowed it today we would have better behaved and more respectful children.

The best teachers are fair, dedicated and mission oriented. They are sensitive to the needs of the student and seek to allow each student to achieve at the level or style that produces the best results for the individual while maintaining a classroom decorum suitable to a stable learning environment.

This is the best type of teacher. Far to many teachers are unable to teach to the best of their ability because of an inconsistency in their discipine techniques. A good teacher who has full class control is the best model for this.

yes, trust me, i am in secondry school and strict but fair teahers have turned me around! If teachers are too soft, then pupils will get away with things, if teachers are too hard on pupils, then pupils will be scared of them and will have no respect for them!
