Name three things that the general philosophical enterprise is aiming for. In other words, three philosophical ideals - you might or might not see them as achievable, that's the nature of ideals - we pursue them in the hope that they might be achievable even if we don't think they are - we pursue them because the pursuit itself is rewarding to the intellect, and can have unexpected spinoff benefits, and might even prove to be practically useful eventually, sometime, to someone, even if it's not us.

2. To know the self as distinguished from not-self.
3. To discriminate between good and bad.

Goal 1. To impart to majors, knowledge of

* the philosophies of some of the major philosophers in the Western tradition,
* the main subject areas of Western philosophy,
* the various schools of thought within the Western philosophical tradition and their methods.

Goal 2. To develop in majors the skills necessary for

* reading, understanding, and evaluating philosophical texts,
* engaging in philosophical thought and dialogue,
* expressing their philosophical ideas clearly and cogently in writing and in speaking.

Goal 3. To instill in majors an attitude of Socratic humility--an attitude that the one thing they know is that they do not know, and in their pursuit of knowledge and truth, they ought to develop a critical attitude and a sensitivity to the views of others.

It seeks to to understand, predict, and control human behavior. Philosopy is the mother of many disciplines such as psychology, sociology, logics, counseling and a host of others. It tries to explain, using didactic reasoning and thought provoking logic, the behavior and purpose of mankind.
