I would read a lot to see how people with different points of views think, and practice acting out scenes from both plays and books. The plays are just a given, but the books will help you take a stronger hand in creating a character. Start writing about characters you are playing - Do you know everything about them? If you know your character, then your acting will be better.

When you act, you should be picturing a personality that you are familiar with in all of its mannerisms. When you act, you have to pretend that you are in the exact situation that is in the script. Even a slight amount of distraction in your mind will be noticeable to an audience. I did a very short skit for my younger brother's cellphone, LOL. It was a Mission Impossible skit, and I was a badguy that snuck up and tried to stab my bro, who was the main character. In order to avoid smiling, I had to wait until I had my mind set. I kept telling myself just to be sure, "Find an angry place... Find an angry place..." You're expression has to be, not only fitting to the moment, but also realistically convincing. There should be the right tension in your face, and believe me, that takes a lot of thought and concentration. In terms of your lines, they have to be the way you would say it in real life, with the proper emphasis and emotion, instead of flat or with the wrong emphasis. I told my brother, just randomly, "If you are ever in a scene in acting and you have to scream, scream as loud as you can..." I told him this just to be sure, because a scream that is really just acting may be difficult to make convincing, but if you do so as loud as possible, or at least, with as much effort, it may be less loud than you intended, but still louder than if you didn't put forth 100% effort. You have to really imagine that you are in the situation. During slow, talk scenes where two people are discussing a deep subject, your face has to look concerned to the furthest extent. You can't simply nod and look like you find something funny, which is what'll happen if you aren't in the right mood. Try to keep picturing what your face looks like during each scene, and this will enable you to keep within the right mood per scene. The little skit I did was nothing serious, but I viewed it as an opportunity to test myself and see if I'm cut out for acting. It is much harder than it looks!

choose the area of acting - comic, dramatic, mime, etc.
work each one at a time, but work well! then move on to the next.
your mirror is the firts amazing audience you will be performing for.
I have written a few exercises that help. I teach theater to children and adults in a community group.
if you can join a community acting group (churches are good IF you are into it).

You can find an acting coach, for "brush-up" on your acting.
Only you can know how long it will take. It depends on how frequently you see your acting coach, and, how dedicated you are to improving your skills.

Improve from what? To what? The better you are, the longer it will take. The best spend their entire lives trying to improve. It's only the mediocre who think they've "arrived".

think you can do it...and practice correctly..
perform in front of people! let them criticize you so you know what your weak and strong points are..then work on your weak points.
find a good acting teacher..one that you're comfortable with and work with them for howeer long you need because everyone's different and everyone develops their skills differently. so..give it some time
