It's classified as a sport (a competition between two people or two groups of people). Chess is a sport.
Sumo wrestling is a sport except sumo wrestlers are at least twice the size of a darts player. Besides which there are thin and medium sized darts players. Fishing is classed as a sport but I cannot see the point of sitting on a river bank for hours on end with the company of a plastic tub full of maggots.
I recommend that you invest in a dictionary, flip through the pages to the letter S (it comes after R) and then look for sp then spo, then spor and finally sport - you may read exactly what it does mean.
I do see your point though - darts is not a very good sport and most of the professional players are overweight.
Please excuse the sarcasm but the last week has been one of those 'why the hell did I bother' weeks.

Sport - a game or competitive activity - according to the Oxford Dictionary - or something along those lines from memory - so its both.

Fitness - there are all sorts of fitness. You look at a Hammer thrower in the olymics and a sprinter - who is fitter? The hammer thrower can probably lift more weight, throw the hammer for hours on end - the sprinters arm would ache after a while.

I dont really do darts - I am more football and rugby but I did a charity darts tournament for a few hours and my arm ached like mad the next day as using a different motion, muscles etc. Am I unfit? The darts player would probably have done it no problem, no aches......

So Darts is a sport - A darts player is therefore a sportsman and fit does not mean thin!

Darts is more of a game that can be played at professional levels. Kind of like poker but more in the lines of billiards. May be considered a sport by some but is more a professional game.

As for a fat, unfit guy being a sportsman, well it's hard to say that you are a 'sportsman' being unfit. Maybe 'sportsman' isn't what you need to be.

A fat, unfit guy can be a sportsman. Just at a lot of major league pitchers,NFL lineman, and heavyweight boxers.

As for darts, not a sport because there is no physical play or defense played!

LOL I was gonna say Gazza !!!!

But seriously, I used to play competition darts and do still play it every once in a while. I agree that it's not a sport in the true sense of the word but as for example pool and snooker it requires skill and, as with those game type sports, a certain level of physical performance. I mean, try controlling your body's movements throwing that one deciding dart in the last leg of a championship when nerves take control ! I've been there and I can tell you, it's not easy !

A sport is a game requiring physical skill. As such darts is indeed a sport.

They are plenty fat unfit people in sport. Look at Baseball and Cricket for instance.

It could probably be considered both. Having participated in several large tournaments, I agree with you that many if not most of the participants tend to be unathletic. At the beginner to intermediate levels, being heavy actually seems to be an advantage in that big people tend to keep their body still when throwing leading to greater accuracy. Many light people seem to want to almost dance or do the "ballerina" when they throw making it very difficult to be consistent. Whether you want to call it a sport or a game, Darts is great fun. Its highly competitive, takes a great deal of talent and practice and you can have a beer while you participate.

If Butterbean (boxer) can be called an athlete, then darts can certainly be called a sport.

A game is when chance is a driving factor in the outcome. Sports depend on physical skill. Since it does take practice and skill to hit a target on the dartboard, it's a sport.

Here's the CORRECT answer. Darts is a game, that is sometimes played competitively. It is much like billiards, in that you don't have to be in good physical shape to be good at it. The term "sport" is thrown around too much anymore as it relates to certain games. For example, there are chess tournaments for money...is chess a sport? NO. It's a game. Same thing with mini golf, poker, etc. They are GAMES that are played competitively.

Darts players are sometimes fat but not all of them!
This is because their sport doesn't require physical fitness, it requires a steady hand, good number skills and concentration to win. I think darts is a game and a sport.
