We need to learn. All jobs require a certain amount of intelligence. As well, we have just one system in place in terms of jobs and academics, so you aren't recognized as "capable" or intelligent unless you go through the system that is in place, and that would be the school system.
The world needs a way to measure a person's capabilities, and supposedly school is that unit of measure. In other words, how would we know if a person is smart enough to work at a place? School is supposed to be your proof.

Modern school are just a babysitting service. Its to keep the children off the streets and out of the grown ups hair for a few hours so society can function peacefully. Education is just something extra for the students who want to learn.

THE REASON TEACHERS AND PARENTS WILL TELL YOU:
- So you can succeed.
- So you can be smart.
- To prepare for college.
THE REAL REASON:
- To keep you out of trouble.
- To learn discipline, time management skills, listening skills, following directions, working in groups.
- To get along with people...including people you don't like.
- Because most people don't know how to learn on their own. There are tons of ways to learn. But most people won't go out and talk to smart people. They'll just sit and watch tv. School keeps you moving and has a structured schedule to follow.

Humans have minimal instincts, and therefore our young are the most helpless on the planet. Also, because of our intelligence, it takes 20 years for our young to reach adulthood, or 1/5 of a lifespan. ALL survival skills must be taught, rather than come from instinct (the only instincts we have are infant-parent bonding, the urge to communicate and form social groups, the urge to mate, and fight-or-flight).
Humans also have specialized as individuals, which has allowed for the creation of civilization. Instead of every single human having to take care of every single need (grow food, hunt food, make clothes, make and maintain shelter, make own tools, etc.), each human takes on a speciality as an adult, and trades his/her skill with others to meet his/her needs. Specialists can also focus their time not just on routine production, but on improvements. Therefore, gains in technology and methods.
Each specialization is defined in trade value to society by several functions, including supply/demand, complexity and background training of skill, and history of the specialization. Trade value is measured in money. Teachers get low pay because of factors from supply/demand and the specialization history, even though the complexity and background training levels indicate twice the value that is currently set.
School's primary purposes are to teach children HOW to think (logic, problem-solving, sequential reasoning), and the basic skills expected of adults. In our high-tech information-based society, print skills (reading/writing) and math are essential. Social studies teaches historical and social patterns, and records of decision-making outcomes. Science teaches a way of looking at the physical world, categorization, and logic.
In high school, children start to make choices that will guide their specialization. They complete the training for their specialization either on-the-job, at vocational/tech schools, or in college.
So, children are sent to school to learn the skills needed in an information-based skills-trading society. They go to school rather than have their parents teach them because their parents are busy with their own specialities, and it IS a specialization to teach.
Homeschooling parents that are effective, essentially self-teach themselves about basic teaching skills. They spend 1/2 their day doing instruction, the other 1/2 on housework and regular parenting, and usually don't hold down another job. They are NOT free to pursue any other career while they teach their own children.
You need to go to school to become a productive, specialized, contributing-to-society adult.

You don't need to.
Anything I learnt was from TV, Internet, my Dad or just being out in the world, not school.
School taught me nothing that I need to know now.
