Travelling by train is probably your best bet. Hostels and pensiones offer cheap lodging. In terms of places to go, the following are my favorite destinations in Europe, but with a full year, you can visit them all and much more.

Venice:
A beautiful city that is eminently walkable. Beautiful and historic sites throughout the city are just waiting to be found. You can lose yourself among the quaint alleys and streets and come upon antique merchants, glass blowers, and charming cafes at every turn. I had heard that the canals have an unpleasant odor, but I did not find this to be the case at all. Probably an urban myth.

Prague:
Prague is a beautfiul city. Like Venice, the charm of this city lies in its many alleys of merchants, restaurants, and artisans, especially around Old Town Square. Like many cities, Prague has some areas that have become a bit too touristy, but it is still a wonderful destination.

Santorini:
This Greek island is an amazing destination that offers a unique cityscape. Just walking through the streets of Oia which hangs precipitously on the edge of the caldera is an experience. Aside from exploring Oia and the wineries of Santorini, you can also swim in the caldera. The seawater within the caldera is naturally heated by the volcano, offering a hot-spring like experience in the ocean.

Vienna:
This historic city has so many sites to see that you can spend many days here. Aside from the incredible palaces and museums, the highlights I would recommend are the Vienna Boys Choir and the Spanish Riding School where you will see the famous Lipizzaner Stallions.

Having been to many European cities, these four are my favorite destinations. I hope this is helpful!

There are youth hostels everywhere. If you are under the age of 26, you can get the youth fares. If you would prefer hotels, visit www.venere.com - they were the cheapest I found. You have to spend some time in Germany. I would suggest Cologne, the cathedral there is magnificient. It was the tallest building in the world before the empire state bulding was constructed. You can also take river boat trips down the Rhine river for relatively cheap and see all the castles that dot the hillside. There is a youth hostel called Bacharach (sp?) that was an old castle that they converted into a youth hostel. It sits high up on the mountainside and is a hike to get to but the view is spectacular and it's always cool to stay in a castle. Italy is an absolute must. You have to see Venice and Rome.

Travel for a year??? Woooh!!!
Anyway I think u should try the Mediterranean country because they are very beautiful countries with great culture and history. I can give u many suggestions about my country (Greece).
If u come to Greece u definately have to visit some islands and if u come at low season (except 1-20 august) the prices are low.
Some islands I think u HAVE to see are: Santorini, Sifnos, Ios, Rhodes, Crete, Paros etc...
If u come to Athens (the capital) I would advice u to take the Ferry and move to islands which it would cheaper.
Also about staying u don't really have to book anything because it would be easier to find a cheap room when u go there and also u can get a discount if u staying for some days...
Ah! almost everybody here speaks english and feel free to ask me for more details!!!

Well, any country really. Try the Mediterranean for great culture, but be careful when traveling by yourself.

Depends on where you want to be for each season. It will be difficult/costly to spend the summer near the beaches.

Hostels abound in Europe, which is a good thing. Some of them are hit or miss, others are great.
