wat is the purpose and why?

I think in old time it started with name of head of family ,the children was known with the name of father ,and as with time the family start growing it start coming last name,in India some places villages and states became with family name or last name.

To signify your Family/Clan as well as the fact having just a 1st name can confuse some people

I guess it could be a serie of numbers as well, but something has to be in addition, because the first names are so few and the people are so many.

It is to show that you are from a certian family with a unique name which is called the last name =)

the last name refers to your family name people rarely have identical family names but many hane the same first name.so the last name distinguishes people from each other
