The stories are interesting.
By studying the beliefs of a society, we learn more about the society. In turn we can see how our own society has developed, either as a result of the earlier culture or in contrast with a different culture.
We can understand the references made by earlier authors, such as Shakespeare.
Mythology is part of history; not the content of the myths (though often they are based on historical events) but the creation and setting down of those stories.
One person's myth is another's sacred scripture.
We can use myths to reflect upon aspects of society today. Euripedes did this in his day.
I realize this is all too pedantic, but I fall back on my first statement: myths are interesting and are fun to read.

Certain words are derived from greek mythology, plus people can learn more about a particular culture through studying mythology ( it helps when you go to historical sites).

For me, it is to gain wisdom through past cultures. After taking a mythology class, I find myself wanting to know more about the past.
Also, as a writer, I use myth to story tell. You should read Joseph Campbell books to get more insight on the significance of mythology- it has a lot to do with psychology, society, and deeper truths of life.

I suffered through Greek and Roman mythology in high school and college. Now, that I am old, I am glad I did. It gives you culture and understanding.

Because it's fun, it's the origin of modern fiction, it helps people understand other cultures, it helps us guess where we're going to end up in 100 years (you have to know exactaly where you've been if you wan't to know where you're going) and without knowing any mythology no one would be able to guess where my username came from.

Learning about other cultures can be interesting, and part of that has to do with studying their belief system. It can help you to understand the world view of that culture. I find the Greek and Roman myths fascinating, and visiting historical places like the Roman Forum with ruins of temples to various gods makes it even more so. Not to mention that the stories are entertaining in and of themselves.

on one hand it is to know the cultures of other ancient nations.
on the other hand i think that it can give some irrational explanations about stuff that doesn't make sense and have no scientific and rational explanations......although the explanations that mythology gives us could be the only explanation..sometimes....don't you think its better than having no explanations at all.....or what so..?!
