I'm doing the same thing that you are doing, except I am from the states. I just returned from a vacation in Los Angeles and I rented a car and found that driving in LA was a wonderful experience. Orlando however is not really the same at all.
Orlando driving has quite a few drawbacks. Mainly, traffic, especially during the summer months is horrendous! Rush hour (or the morning and evening commute to work) can be painful to sit through and it lasts for quite awhile. Rush hours usually last from 6am - 9am and 4pm - 6:30pm and you could end up sitting on the highway for about an hour just to go a stretch maybe a mile or two long.
Not just Orlando, but Florida in general is known for two things when driving is concerned....tourists and the elderly. Take this into consideration. Knowing where you are going before you get onto the road or having a navigator with you is important. You will find many elderly people driving on the slower side as well as many map-toting tourists making last minute decisions to get on and off the highway, merging, turning, slowing down unexpectedly and swerving (due to trying to read a map and drive at the same time). So in that respect, it can be very difficult to drive through as I have found in the past.
The only other thing about Florida roads is that they are quite fond of the toll booth. Be sure to carry a lot of loose change with you at all times as you never know when you will hit a toll booth. Fortunately there are none on the two main tourist roadways of International Drive (I-Drive) or Interstate 4 (I-4). There are a couple, however leaving the Orlando Int'l airport.
Those are my only grips about driving in Orlando. Otherwise, its very nice down there and much much easier than relying on shuttles and public transportation.
Good luck on your trip and have safe travels.

Pay attention to elderly and tourist drivers. I've seen people pull U-Turns on the main highway. Know where you are going before you go. Pay attention to signs, and stay in the right lane on the highway so you don't have to cut across 4 lanes of traffic to get off an exit. There are a lot of people driving in Orlando... my ex just returned back there after a 4 year absence and he was amazed.... said you couldn't drive anywhere without a delay.

Orlando is a city made for driving. We have barely any public transportation, driving is really the only way to get around. I enjoy driving in Orlando, but there are a few roads I go out of my way to avoid. Colonial and Fairbanks are annoying.

If you can handle LA, you can handle Orlando. I-4 takes you to the 408, which is connected to the 417-- these major highways connect everything around Orlando (although the latter two are toll roads). As long as you know the difference between going east and west, or which direction your destination lies from wherever you're at, you'll be golden.

Be sure to always watch the road, and your immediate surroundings, because there are alot of IDIOT drivers here in Orlando. People slam on there brakes for no reason, turn right from the far left lane (visa versa), go 20MPH on the highway, etc...
Maps are sold everywhere if you want one, but I-4 takes you to all the main attractions, along with I-Drive (International Drive).
Good Luck, and enjoy your trip here.

Yes Orlando is easy to drive around, just watch out for the window cleaners when you stop at lights!
There is the main stretch of road running right through it from Kissimee to the main highway to Universal etc.
***edit****
Definatly keep change for toll booths

Orlando is pretty bad during the summer since there are a lot of people going to Disneyworld in Kissimmee.

Traffic in Orlando/Kissimmee area is going to be bad in the summer all the tourists and some aren't used to the heat which makes them crabby. But besides that it is easy to navigate through that area as long as you pay attention to your directions.

My experience of driving around orlando is it is pretty easy. Nearly everyone there is a tourist on vacation. A good map and a sense of direction is all you will need.
