Yes, I believe in them & most people I know claim to have encounters as well. There was a woman that had died in the house that we grew up in & my siblings claimed that they saw her ghost outside the window facing toward the garden.
We did have strange occurrences in the house (several light bulbs popping in the same room but then working properly later on without the bulbs being changed, things suddenly disappearing & showing up in the most unlikely places later on, cold spots, etc.) but these may be contributed more to poltergeist activity more to a haunting. We were a large family & poltergeists are very likely to be around adolescents.
My mother did have a very frightening [supernatural] experience in my sister's bedroom & would never sleep in that room after that.
I have seen a doppelganger of my cat (which is very likely--she is an evil thing!), & ectoplasm in the sense of an entity that could fully materialize.
I think that we all have the ability to see them if we only our minds to them. All children have the ability until it is "brain-washed" out of them, which I think is extremely sad. I think that if we were to keep an open mind to these type things it would be easier to open hearts & minds to other things as well, like being more acceptable of others [living] as well.

i think there are good ghosts and bad ghosts, ghosts who love this world too much to leave it and ghosts who have "unfinished dirty business".
the good ghosts pretty much leave us alone but are probably glad about our company so they wouldn't want to scare us away either. i don't think they're afraid of light and probably they're everywhere but we just don't know they're there. they've been human once too and they know what it's like to be afraid of ghosts! :p
the bad ghosts are the typical "scary ghosts" but they probably leave us alone if they're looking for one target. if they're in a bad mood then of course they haunt your typical "haunted houses": those reflect their dark moods! if they're vindictive against all humankind, that's when they start giving off a bad aura and scaring people and such!
i think there are as many or more ghosts than humans. more people have died than there are living now right? so probably only the DARK ghosts make their presence known.
(and no i haven't met a ghost and DON'T want to meet one... well if i do, i hope it's a good ghost who doesn't show itself but just makes me feel better when i'm depressed or something without me realising it's there ^_^)

personally, i think ghost are just souls that has an unfinished business here on earth. they died before they can finish it, so their souls come back and attempt to accomplish the task. i also think that ghosts are souls of family members who aren't willing to let go of their family just yet. So they're here to watch over them and make sure they are indeed, safe.

I think ghosts would appear more often, but they don't want to frighten us.

Leave them alone, and pray for them, so that they will find their way to where they should be going.
If they don't leave you alone, you make them do so.
Here is an effective source for helping yourself: chanting the Shurangama Sutra. (check with google)
Any other questions about it, you're welcome to email me, and let's find a solution.
