Is it an actual sport? No. Are many of the stunts actually performed? Yes.
The wrestlers do get in there and mix it up, although much of it is choreographed to look more intense than it really is. The bottom line is that the outcomes are predetermined, so in that respect, it's fake. It's basically sports theater, not sports. Think of it as a ballet; the dancers are incredible athletes, but the swan is still going to die at the end.

You betcha.
However...
Anyone besides me remember the Geraldo incident when he tried to pull his investigative reporter schtick on pro wrestling?
Anyone else remember them beating the crap out of him and then Geraldo turning around and suing the same folks?
And ofcourse they then promptly laughed at him, didn't they?
It may be fake, but those guys have alot of money and fans to lose if they just admit it as well as that wierd ManThing going on to the extreme. Ipso facto, they weren't about to let some news magazine guy come along and ruin it for them. In other words it's fake, they know it, you know it and I know it, but those wrestlers are big and can hurt somebody if they need to in order to prove a point and protect their livelihoods. Until reality tv came along, there wasn't much else they could do to make that kind of money at the time.

Wrestling is just like stunts, they do hit each other and feel pain, but they do not feel pain or hit each other in that way you think they are. They are stuntmen, they are trained to hit each other without really causing an injury or a lasting pain on each other except when accidents happen, which do happen often (bleeding, cuts, bruises, that you see happen in accident) Eg, when a "steel" chair is mashed the head of a guy, he starts to bleed, it is because the person used the chair and hit the guy's head without paying attention to the surface of his head, or the how the chair was landing on his head etc. .

its pretty fake. but the better the wrestler is the, better they can sell the hit. if you have a good experienced wrestler it would make it look more realistic. a guy that grunts every time he throws a punch to sell it makes it seem very fake.
