I am in China and my uncle asked me to buy a violin, which I did. Now I want to mess around with it, but I don't know how to play. When my friend was helping me pick it out in the store I could play it, but now I can't make it sound---it's only really faint.

It sounds like you need to resin the bow. That's the little cake of golden amber stuff that usually comes in a cloth. Run your bow (hair side down) on the cake in long, smooth strokes over the resin. When you start to see a sticky, white powdery residue on your bow, it should be ready to use. Be careful not to touch the bow hair with your hands or other parts of your body. The oils in our skin can ruin a bow and render it useless.

P.S. Make sure you wipe your strings off with a soft, dry cloth after playing.

You probably need to put some resin on your bow...do that before trying anything else. If you don't, you risk hurting your instrument.

After that, I would say try pushing down a little harder.

And on a side note, you should really tune the strings every time you play.

The person who tuned your violin knew what was good for your neighbors, that's why it's only faint sound coming from it.

I guess it needs resin.Resin makes the movement of the bow smoother and also improves the sound quality.
