Save money (long time ago I survived with 40 USD / day)
Use travelers checks...EUROS...the USD won't take you far!!
Use a money belt to secure all your important documents.

Live at home a copy of all your documents. Ask someone you trust to keep them... in case you need them they can be UPS for you wherever you are! Make a list of the your Embassies or consulates.

Check if you need a visa to enter the country you want (like Turkey and Poland)

Buy a Health Insurance (better to be safe than sorry)

Buy a book name "Let's go Europe"...Read it carefully and decide a route and a time table (this book is like the bible and you have to read it first!!!)

Buy a light backpack and something to sleep INSIDE (like a sleeping bag...but those are heavy...so make one with a cover or a bed sheet)

If you have time...some airlines sell last minute tickets reaaallly cheap...but you have to be on the waiting list and it may take a few days..that you'll have to spend at the airport!

Buy 1 euro train pass (If i remember correctly the name is eurail pass, it's different if you are from Europe) If you travel by night let's say from Germany to France...you'll save the hotel fee! (some time airlines have "combos" and they offer you both services!)

According to the time table (when you buy the eurail it comes with it) and the Let's go Europe book you can create an itinerary of the things you want to see and how many days you want to spend in that country...something like:

Day 1: Madrid, visit La Plaza Mayor, Parque del Retiro, Museo de la Reina Sofia...

Day 2: Train to Barcelona

Day 3: train to Paris visit. L' Etoile or the Arc de Triomphe, Musée du Louvre,

Day 4: Place de la Concorde, La Basilique du Sacré Coeur de Montmartre.....

Day 5: train to Belgium....GET IT???

Try to invest your time in places that offer what you are looking for. (Don't go to Pisa, Italy it will cost you and you wont be able to go inside La Torre Pendente!) Search on the web if the place you want to visit is open: La Fontana de Trevi, Roma last time I went was not!!! The parts of the famous wooden bridge (Hofbrucke) in Luzern was burned down!!!

Usually in Europe we have two major train terminals (as well as Airports)...not only one...like in Paris (Gare du Nord and Gare du Sud). Be aware that they are full of people waiting for you to arrive...they'll try to convince you to stay at the places they want...BUT...instead of that go the tourism office...if you didn't get any info from the book try there! you can buy metro and bus tickets (for one day or the number of rides u'll need)

If you have less than 20 years or something like that (25 tops) u can get a discount card (I don't know where you live but is easy to get one in any youth hostel) It will serve u at the museums, hotels and stuff like that!

If you can't find a youth hostel and you don't mind curfew try with nuns!!! (some convents are BB too)

Don't pack to many clothes...depends on the time of the year...but less is more!!! (pack more underwear so you'll be clean in the inside!) A towel is important (there are some that fit in a bottle!!!) and some plastic sandals (there are people with weird skin diseases!)

Don't eat in restaurants...go to the super markets and prepare your own meals...try for local food...pizza in Italy, giros in Greece, Sausages and beer in Germany, Tapas in Spain...and so on.

And PLEASE...Be careful. Never accept to take care of some else’s bags! Don't go inside a car with people you don't know! (specially men)

Try to look as if you are sure of what you are doing...you'll find some really as ss...if you do.. stop someone else and ask for directions trying not to look scared. Don't get any ideas...it's really sure here!

Bring a gadget like a cell phone, MP3, camera, video c., so you won't have to worry about that!

Make a daily journal!

When you leave a place always turn your head and check if you are not forgetting anything!!!

Enjoy and learn!!! Because this is a life time experience that will change your way of seeing the world!

PS: I'm Italian so I recomend u to visit Italy first!!! :) I'm from Cremona where the best violins are created!! But go to La Toscana (Firenze) Venezia, Perugia (Assisi, Todi), Roma, Positano,Genova, Lago di Como, Lago di Garda, and you have to go to San Petersburg, Prague, Budapest, Copenhagen, Edimburg, London and Madrid!

Lindsay and cc of oz have both given excellent answers. I would also suggest carrying extra water ~ one container specifically for use in the car, and another (kept separately) for drinking. Another good thing to have is a Cancer Council recommended hat (link below). These make a HUGE difference when sight seeing in hot regions. It is also wise to advise someone of the route of your trip and your expected date of arrival / departure. Having a functioning mobile phone which you can charge from the car battery (usually via the cigarette lighter) and which will work in remote areas is also essential. If you DO have a breakdown, do not leave your car and wander away. Stay with your vehicle and wait for a passing vehicle. Cars have been found abandoned with their former occupants dead or dying from dehydration just a few kilometres away, due to the high temperatures. If you are on the road, another vehicle will eventually come along. Spend your time organising shade, instead! Apart from that, do try to sleep under the open sky at least one night ... it is truly amazing! Many people simply drive through the desert as if it was just a throughway to somewhere else, but it is an incredible destination on its own. Take some time to stop, look at wildflowers, the horizon and the land around. If you stick to well travelled routes and take careful note of where you are going (wandering aimlessly is not a good idea!) you should be safe enough. Some more great tips in the links below. Best wishes and have a great trip :-)

If you dont have at least one week for that trip, don`t bother to come to Europe at all. Just for moving from country to country it takes half a day no matter how you travell, exept the ones with a bullet train connections.

Cheapest way to travell would be I guess to rent a car from Germany or France. It`s like 200-300 euros a week.

What cities should you see, is like : Berlin, Munchen, Strasburg, Amsterdam, Uppsala, Stockholm,Kopenhagen, Rome, Napoli, Paris,Nice, Barcelona and Marbella, for starters.
That should give a good discription of Europe.

Staying here costs in cheap hotells from 40-70 euros per night.

I'd suggest that you join a travel discussion group and learn from experienced travelers by reading their messages and picking up tips.

Your question is too general and the answers you get won't make sense until you narrow down your options. You've got to research all the countries you're considering visiting and see which ones offer the experience you're seeking.

Here is our non-commercial travelogue web site: http://www.thetravelzine.com and our travel discussion group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thetravelzine/ If you decide to join (free), you must provide your first name and location. All new members are introduced.

Happy travels!
