I am looking to self-publish a book, but don't want to kill trees.

You have options.
1) You can publish strictly in e-book format. These books are still assigned an ISBN number and are available in multiple formats including Adobe Acrobat and MS Reader.
2) Work with a print on demand provider. This way a book is only printed after it is ordered. Yes, a tree or two will be sacrificed but alt least there is no waste with unpurchased inventory.
