The fact that the files are Available on the Network, must mean they have been placed in a Shared folder on the network by the Administrator, therefore there is no reason to hide the fact that you copied them.
Most networks Are set up by administrators, to be able to see who has been on, so, you cannot hide that fact, if he wishes to know. He has trusted you to be there, don't worry about it.

You can disable the timestamp of the last time the file was acessed by typing this into the command prompt.
FSUTIL behavior set disablelastaccess 1

This is easy.
Just access your machine from his machine( apparently, the one that has the songs) and transfer the folder with the music to your machine.
In this case, he will not be able to tell, say from your machine's Recent Documents ( accessed from Start > All Programs in Windows XP) that u did access his music

you copy and then attrib it / or copy in a word and create a password for the file you have copied.

Doesn't matter. If you are on same network it should be secure. They should not be visible to you and you shouldn't get in troubl. Just say "oh, I was on my PC I didn't go on your PC" PLAY DUMB!
