Why is it that background music helps you meditate better when you are alone, allows you to work better on the job, and makes conversation in a social gathering more thought provoking?

There are several possibilities that should be mentioned........
1)The rythm of a particular piece,ie drums and base, reach the body and are transmitted to the brain partly through the bone structure. This can be a subconsious ehancement to mood, energy levels etc."I danced all nite,we just couldnt sit down!"etc.
2)The imagination and creative segments of the brain become physically more active with audio stimulation of all kinds.music included. You can see the lights switch on when wired to an encephalogram.
3)A certain amount of stress release occurs in most cases when the music itself is not objectioable to the participants.Endorphins are released into the blood stream, and other hormonal activity also may occur depending on the type of music and the suggestability of the hearers.Duetschland uber alles!
Music is an intrinsic part of our soul level being. Thus is capable of corrupting as well as enhancing our behaviour.
There is a lot of years yet to study how music works in our minds and psyches ,our souls ,and bodies. It is very deeply attached to our mental and spiritual well being.......

The beat of certain music influences the brains natural rhythm. Alpha for instance is around 4Hz and this would correspond to most background easy listening music. Slower rhythms than this can lead us into altered states, with practise, like meditation and self hypnosis. Musical beats of around 5 - 6 Hz would be of a relaxing nature and would enhance focus and concentration. Hope this helps. Jules, Australia.

I believe it is the rhythm of the music. Especially if it is instrumental--no vocals to distract you--the mathematical pattern focuses you when you're alone and brings you back to whatever you were meditating or working on. In social gatherings, it masks awkward silences and that rhythm relaxes and induces convo.
