First of all, I'd like to say that you can become successful in any major (whether it is a simple salesman or a brain surgeon) as long as you practise something you enjoy and can excel in. If you end up doing something because it has better income or you have some family pressure, then this might give you career problems later on.
Now, as an electrical engineer myself, I can tell you from my personal experience that electrical engineering has many specializations. For example, you can focus on Control, Power, Micro-Electronics...etc. Many of my electrical engineering classmates even decided to work in software related jobs.
Therefore, by choosing electrical engineering you have many options open (including software) if you decide to change your mind later on. However, things might be a bit more limited if you choose software engineering alone as a major.
Best of luck.

It depends on what you like whether you prefer working with hardware or just writing programs. As child I really enjoyed taking apart TV's, VCR's, and computers, so it was really easy for me to chose communication systems. I work as a communication systems engineer for an electric utility company and most of my work involves specifying communication equipment, interfacing equipment, generating design documentation, and teaching technicians how to install and test equipment.
I would say that the safest job would be one where it requires you to be physically present to perform the work. Most of the jobs I see now a days can almost all be done remotely such as software engineering jobs hence most of the jobs being off shored to India & China. My job requires me to visit mountain top sites by helicopter, driving, or taking plane rides to verify equipment installation, prepapre for new designs.
Another thing to consider is what industry you are working for. If you look at the defense industry it is in a boom now, but after president Bush leaves office it can change drastically. Working for an electric utility company might not be the most exciting thing but most of the people I know working there can retire in 30 years with a pension plan and make a decent salary.
I hope this helps a little.

It is all in the question of what type of person you are. If you like high level programming like Java and C++ then you would love Software Engineering. However, if youre more into the hardware aspect of it then electrical engineering is far superior. Personally, I thought I wanted to be a CPE but I learned in my third programming class that I hated debugging code, also I learned that I hated learning about efficiency of code. Software theory killed it and hence is why I went to electrical engineering. I swore my sophmore year that I wouldnt do it anymore, but I got back into script programming, plus all the hardware programming; esp. assembly language. To me electrical engineering is better, because it is the foundation upon computer engineering, but if voltages and currents make your stomach turn over, then software is definately the way to go.

I am also going through the same confusion as are you.But some of my seniors say that I should go for electrical engineering and simultaneously join a computer course or rather short term computer courses during vacations. This would enable me to make career in both the fields or in a field where the two overlap.
