BMW 315i or 3 series
Mercedes 190
I would really recommend an old car that kicks butt.
Collectables like old Chevy, Fords and depends where you live convertible.

Ok, i was gonna be one of those annoying answers, but
I guess it depends slightly boy vs. girl
Under 50 thou, i would say a bmw that is a 3 series, like a 323, i think i323 is a good one, a used M3 would be a dream for me as a 16 year old, I am 22 now and a BMW is my dream car, so if you want to get him something he/she will like id say go with the Beamer, they are very safe and a Benz is more for an older crowd, as a kid in high school you wont get as much of a WOW reaction for a Mercedez as you would for a BMW, ya know what I mean, Definitely a BMW. And a 5 series is too large of a car for a 16 year old who may not be good at parking a car yet. Hope I could have helped. You didnt specify used vs. new, so not sure which u could afford

If your 16 year old is interested in the mechanical bits of cars, get 2 old ones. One should be a runner and the second a scrapper to cannibalise & keep the first one going (BMW's are generally easier to do this on than Mercs, but not always so). It's a great & fun way of learning & your kid will end up with an asset of experience worth far more than the 50,000 dollars you propose spending.
As for the rest of the cash, buy them a holiday pad somewhere.....

I couldn't tell you which one would be suitable, but as a former valet, I can tell you that driving a late-model BMW is like driving pure silk. If and when you purchase one, I suggest playing music from classical musicians like Mozart or Beethoven as your first listening experience.
If you can find someone who will take an interest in you because of your age, I suggest becoming a valet. This will give you a wide variety of vehicles to "try out" in order to appreciate the higher level of comfort and suitability associated with vehicles like BMW and Mercedes. Simply purchasing the vehicle because you can isn't enough if you don't know what to look or "feel" for in a vehicle of that calibre.
And don't look for that "feel" at the signing of the bottom line of the contract, but rather arm yourself with prior knowledge for the financial aspect of it. Money is meant to be spent; quality is meant to last as long as possible. Sometimes, prior knowledge can be received from an experienced person willing to share his/her knowledge with you; take someone with you who can help you in the purchasing process. It's a higher level of car, so it's not your everyday car salesperson, but they still are salespeople.
Also, the general consensus is that in order to afford a vehicle you need to be able to make 3 times as much money per year as the vehicle costs. This is just FYI and something for you to ponder. Even if you have the money, does budgeting allow for the purchase?

My friend when he was 16, had a BMW and it wasnt a very good car for him to of had. He got speeding tickets all the time, he stood out, and cops give you a ruff time and pull you over for suspicion a lot. I would look at something a little cheaper on repairs and maitence. Possibly like a mustang or something, still nice and classy, just about 10-20 grand cheaper.

OK well I don't understand why people give their kids cars like that but if you must I'd go with the BMW 3 series. By the way, do you want another kid? I'll volunteer even though I'm over 30. I could use a new car. :)

A older one, with a strong body....I was a 16 year old with a brand new car, and I totaled it. I know that will not happen to everyone, and I would not wish it upon anyone. But the truth is, older cars were made more solid, and are safer. If you have the money, buy the kid a new car when they graduate college. Good Luck.

BMW has the best coverage for new and used BMWs. Free maintance for 50,000 or 3 years which ever comes first. That includes washer fluid, wiper blades, and anything else except tires.

A decent nice one would be a 320 cd, all options. A coupe, diesel ie fuel efficient, powerful, safe and of course the Ultimate driving machine. I would get one if I had that kinda cash.
All the best. Holla me when u buy it, would love a ride.

Neither, unless Mommy and Daddy are also going to pay for the repairs and upkeep..or the kid has a heck of a job. There are many other reliable, less expensive to maintain cars for first time drivers.
